Say goodbye to body hair
Laser hair removal is a procedure where laser light is used to stop hair growth by preventing the development of hair follicles in the treated areas of the body.
During the treatment, the wavelength laser technology is directed to the areas of the skin where you wish to remove hair. This laser technology starts to damage the melanin-containing hair follicles in the skin. Over a period of a few minutes, these follicles will be completely destroyed. While a single treatment only slows down hair growth, multiple sessions will stop hair growth.
The truth about laser hair removal is that the results are semi-permanent. While some hair follicles are permanently damaged and will never re-grow, there may be others that may grow back after 5 to 6 years. A few sessions of laser hair removal can help you eliminate these follicles as well. At CaTara Medical Spa, we use the GentleMax Pro® laser by Candela, which is the gold standard in laser hair removal.
Laser hair removal pre-treatment
You are advised to stop any hair removal treatments prior to your first laser hair removal session. Since all hair removal treatments focus on removing the hair from the follicles, you won’t have any follicles to work on if you wax or tweeze yourself.
Remember to not expose your body to the sun before the treatment, as sunburn can make your skin sensitive to laser light. Additionally, melanin production will increase due to exposure to the sun and since melanin gives hair its color, you may experience hair color complications if you expose yourself to the sun too much. Our laser hair removal treatment does not require a lot of hair, rather the hair just needs to be generated or have begun to grow within the follicle.
On the day of the treatment
Please ensure that you shave the treatment area 24 – 48 hours before your appointment. You are likely to experience little to no pain or discomfort as our laser supplies a cooling air to the area being treated. A single session of laser hair removal can last anywhere between 10-30 minutes, larger areas needing to be treated will take more time.
The GentleMax Pro® laser is designed to provide safe, effective and fast hair removal. With patient satisfaction and comfort at the heart of our laser hair treatments, the GentleMax Pro® has been proven successful for hair removal in skin types I-VI.
Previously, it may have been common for patients undergoing laser hair removal to feel frustrated at not getting the results they had hoped for despite receiving several treatments. Patients who have received treatments with the GentleMax Pro® are quite often extremely pleased with the outcome, even after one treatment.
One of the main benefits to our laser is the wavelength can be adjusted, allowing us to treat most skin types with great benefits. Patients with darker skin types, sun damage, or age spots can be treated. By using a longer wavelength when needed, the ability to penetrate the skin at a deeper level is possible. This allows your provider to deliver the laser light to the heart of the hair follicle, ensuring successful treatment.
Laser hair removal post-treatment
Following the procedure, the treatment area may be inflamed, red or appear to be sunburned. These effects will generally subside within a day or two. Our practitioners will cover the treated area with an ice pack. This will bring down any inflammation of the tissues. You may be given a healing serum or lotion to soothe your skin. The skin surrounding the treated area will also be cleaned gently.
You are advised to wear SPF moisturizers every day to hydrate your skin and to keep it safe from heat and light. You are advised to avoid exposing the treated area to the sun for six weeks after the treatment. Typically, subsequent sessions of the laser hair removal will be scheduled once every 4 to 6 weeks. This gives your skin plenty of time to heal, and the provider will be able to identify patches where the follicles are still growing hair.
Generally speaking, you may need to undergo a total of 5 to 7 sessions for best results. Certain areas of the body tend to respond quicker than others, needing fewer treatments, while more challenging areas will require additional treatments to achieve the intended results.
