Did you spend a lot of time in your youth out in sun trying to get that perfect summer glow tan or maybe just didn’t get in the habit of wearing sunblock when you went to the beach? Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of skin aging. It is estimated that UV exposure is responsible for up to 90% of visible aging.

The sun not only effects the elasticity of the skin leading to lines, wrinkles, and sagging. Sun exposure can also lead to spotty pigmentation. At CaTara Medical Spa, we use the laser photofacial treatment to target sun damage, age spots, and freckles.

What is the Photofacial Procedure?

The laser photofacial raises the temperature of unwanted pigment and breaks up that pigment. The shattered pigment is then absorbed and eliminated by the body. Treatment generally takes about 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.

Mild sunburn-like sensations and sometimes minor swelling are expected immediately after the treatment. This usually only lasts anywhere from 2-24 hours. Ice packs can be used to soothe the treated area. A series of 3-5 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart are typically needed for optimal results.

What Areas Can Be Treated with Laser Photofacial?

The most common area treated is the face, but other areas are treated as well.

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Back of the hands
  • Top of the shoulders
  • Back

Multiple areas can also be treated at the same time.

Laser Hand Rejuvenation

Laser therapy can be used to reduce the appearance of brown spots, sun damage, and wrinkles on the backs of the hands. Our hands are subject to many harsh environmental and chemical factors throughout our lives and tend to age faster than less exposed parts of the skin. Laser treatment of the hands can help reduce imperfections and improve the overall texture and tone of your hands.

Additional Benefits of Laser Photofacial

Because heat is being used to treat the pigmentation, there are other benefits to laser photofacials. Broken blood vessels in the area can coagulate and shrink reducing their appearance. This reduction of dilated blood vessels can decrease flushing as well. The heat also stimulates collagen growth which improves skin texture.

What is the Candela GentleMax Pro?

The Candela GentleMax Pro is the device used for your photofacial. This skin rejuvenation treatment uses laser energy to stimulate the production of collagen, resulting in skin cell renewal. This process replaces old skin cells with new, healthy skin cells, leaving you with healthier, radiant, and younger-looking skin.

The treatment is safe and effective for all skin types. Candela GentleMax Pro’s patented technology allows it to deliver consistent cold bursts, while at the same time preventing thermal damage in the treatment area.

Candela GentleMax Pro will first emit a pulse of cooling spray in the treatment area to protect it against burn. A pulse of laser light will then be emitted in order to target hair follicles or simulate skin cell renewal. It is normal to experience a tolerable stinging sensation and is desired as the therapeutic heat is being absorbed by the skin tissue.

This treatment can take 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the existing skin condition, treatment area, and your desired cosmetic goals.

Laser Photofacial Post-Care

This treatment is minimally invasive and has little to no downtime, but it is very important to treat the skin gently and protect it as it will be sensitized and more vulnerable. Avoid sun exposure for 1 week after treatment to reduce the chances of sunburn, darkening of the skin, or lightening of the skin. You also want to use gentle cleansers and a minimum of SPF 30 during the entire course of the treatment.
