What exactly is Botox?
Botox is one of the most-recommended and most-used cosmetic treatments in the world. It helps prevent the formation of deep lines on the body. Botox (OnabotulinumtoxinA) is a protein that is synthesized from the botulinum toxin. This toxin is produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria.
There are seven sub-species of this bacteria (Bacteria A-G) and the Type A Clostridium botulinum is used in many brands. While Botox can cause illness in very heavy doses, in the right quantity, it is extremely beneficial to the health and appearance of your skin. The protein is injected into the skin in minute doses to stop the formation of wrinkles and lines.
What can Botox do and who can benefit from it?
Botox can be used to treat:
- Wrinkles & fine lines in the face
- Crow’s feet
- Bunny lines
- Lip lines
- Brow droops
- Creases on the chin & jowls
Who can receive Botox injections?
Absolutely anyone over the age of 25 can get Botox, providing that:
- They don’t have a dermatological or neurological condition
- They are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- They don’t have muscle weakness or a muscular condition in the treatment area
Botox vs. Dermal fillers
In order to understand the difference between Botox and dermal fillers, you need to first understand how Botox works. Botox is a neurotoxin, and it affects the nerves in the treatment area. When injected into your skin, the Botox numbs the nerves in the area and stops neural signals from passing through.
Wrinkles and lines are formed when certain types of neural signals are sent from one part of the body to another to initiate tissue contraction. This results in the crinkling of the skin. When Botox is injected, the nerves in that area of the body become temporarily incapable of sharing signals, and the tissues become temporarily frozen. Once this happens, the contractions and the crinkling of the skin stops, leaving behind flawless, smooth skin.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are designed to prevent wrinkles and lines by increasing the volume of the tissues and muscles in the treatment area. As you age, your muscles and tissues lose volume and become thin. This can affect the shape of your face and cause wrinkles. Dermal fillers are injected into areas of the face that are very thin in order to fill in the face and prevent sagging skin.
Botox takes up to 2 weeks to see the full effects. With dermal fillers you will see immediate results.
Other benefits of Botox
In addition to smoothening your skin and preventing wrinkle development, a Botox injection can bring you immense health benefits. Some of the other conditions that Botox can address include:
- Spasms in the eye
- Excessive sweating
- Cold limbs
- Spasms in the neck
- Specific bladder control problems
The CaTara Botox procedure
At CaTara Medical Spa, we start with a consultation, where your medical provider will conduct a thorough assessment of your skin. We will identify the areas to be treated and calculate the doses to be used. It is recommended that you avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications and Aspirin for at least two weeks before the treatment.
The Botox procedure is extremely safe and can be completed within 15 minutes. No numbing agent is used. Our practitioner will use separate injections for each treatment area. We believe in and strive for natural looking results. Once injected, the Botox will immediately start acting on the underlying tissues and muscles but it could take up to 14 days to see the full effects. This is why we do a 2 week follow-up visit, to make sure you are completely satisfied with the outcome.
The great thing about Botox is that there is zero downtime. You can get back to work immediately after the procedure.
You may see minor bruising on the injection site. You may also experience numbness in the treatment area for a few weeks, and you may be unable to move your muscles much. That’s completely normal. Once the Botox settles, you will slowly regain your ability to move your muscles.
We advise that you don’t touch/rub the treated area for the next 12 to 24 hours. Don’t lie down for 3 to 5 hours as well. This will ensure that the Botox works.
How long do Botox results last?
Depending on your skin type, the area treated, and the severity of the wrinkles, your Botox injections may last between 3 to 6 months. After this period, the effects of the Botox will start to reduce, and you may start to see wrinkles again.
